Women and leadership

It is a given that gender diversity leads to improved performance and the business case for this has been well and frequently made.

Time has not proved the answer. The past 30 years in Australia has seen women graduate from universities at higher rates than men, yet only 10.1 per cent of key executive roles in ASX200 companies are held by females.

Taking 90 per cent of company leadership from only 50 per cent of the talent pool simply does not make sense but this is the reality in Corporate Australia today.

The Business Council of Australia report (September 2013) recommends…

  • Targeted development and sponsorship of identified female talent and successors to enable role readiness, increase the numbers and quality of internal female appointments and enhance their retention.
  • Companies focus the training and education component of women’s development on supplementing mainstream development initiatives in order to deliver for women what men receive through their established informal mentoring and sponsorship networks.
