Roger Federer – The Importance of Storytelling

After watching Roger Federer’s semi final win in the Australian Open, I must admit it was a pleasant surprise to listen to his comments on the importance of storytelling. I’ve included his clip for those interested (start watching at approx. 2 mins 14 secs).

Teaching Storytelling

It is almost 14 years ago to the day that I left my role as a senior leader at nab to set up a company teaching business leaders how to engage and inspire through storytelling.

Back then storytelling was a little known leadership skill. It would be fair to say I had a tough time convincing companies of the need for it. Over time that has significantly changed, to the point that storytelling seems all the rage these days…. and rightly so.

What I have learnt

Leaders have realised the power of storytelling in business to better communicate their messages and engage employees in their values and strategy. Overall it is a brilliant way to influence and inspire others.

From my experiences teaching storytelling to business professionals around the globe, I think there are three distinct benefits leaders can gain from using storytelling; both for themselves and for the people they lead.

For employees, using stories can help them:

  • To better understand and remember messages.
  • To engage in company values so they are lived, not just espoused.
  • Be inspired by company purpose, which is a win win for everyone.

For the leader, using stories can help them become more:

  • Trusted and respected.
  • Approachable and ‘human’.
  • Authentic and likable.

What’s more, using stories will help leaders become better presenters and employees will want to work for them. Of course you only get these benefits if you are authentic and you invest the time in learning the art of storytelling. Believe me, using storytelling in business is not as easy as it may appear.

An obstacle for some can be that you have to be prepared to show a little bit of vulnerability. The very best storytellers embrace vulnerability and you could say they are a perfect match!

So, if you want to take your game to number 1 (almost done with the tennis puns) then check out one of my offerings below …they are ace!
