There have been many stand-out moments for me over the past 20 years of teaching people storytelling.
One highlight includes running workshops for the Obama Foundation. I’ve also presented some of the coolest locations like Wall Street, New York and an old castle in London where Henry VIII once lived.
Without a doubt though, the best moments have come from seeing the impact my training has had on the participants.
I remember running a storytelling workshop about 15 years ago. Back then, I always had a few sceptical participants, and this day was no different. It was a bit of an older crowd and there was one man who had his arms crossed the whole time. I can still recall he looked a lot like Santa Claus with a long, white flowing beard.
Towards the end of the session, he raised his hand and asked if he could make a comment. I was expecting the worst but then he said:
“I am retiring in 3 weeks, and I wish I had learned this skill 45 years ago.”
This is still one of my proudest and most memorable moments.
Many of my clients provide storytelling training to their graduates or emerging leaders and I remind them what a gift they are receiving to learn a critical communication skill so early in their career.
I do hope my Santa Claus look alike took the skill of storytelling into whatever he did next.
It is never too early or too late to learn this valuable skill.
For those interested, we have just announced all my public workshops for 2025 (see the details below).
