Why Virtual Presentations are so bloody hard… and what you can do about it

Blog

Over the past few years, we’ve all experienced an unprecedented shift towards virtual presentations. A change that was required for us to work from home during the COVID lockdowns.

As we have transitioned back to the office, we have seen a reduction in the frequency of virtual presentations and meetings but an increase in hybrid delivery. And if you thought presenting virtually was hard, presenting in a hybrid environment is even harder. It creates even more challenges for presenters.

The Challenges of Virtual Presentations

Virtual presentations bring about some unique challenges, including:

  • Difficulty in reading the audience
  • Maintaining energy throughout the presentation – both yours and the audience
  • Encouraging audience engagement and interaction
  • Using chat and breakout rooms effectively

Top 3 Tips

To help you improve your virtual presentations, here are my top 3 tips:

  1. Stand and deliver: If you would typically present to a live audience standing up, do the same when presenting virtually. It can significantly boost your energy and engagement.
  2. Camera placement: Always position your camera at eye level, whether you’re sitting or standing. No one wants to look up your nose during a presentation.
  3. Eye contact: Focus on looking at the camera rather than the faces on the screen to maintain better eye contact with your audience.

How to Improve Your Skills Further

Virtual presentations are here to stay, and new skills are required for us to make the most of this medium.

If you or your team are interested in improving your presentation skills, whether it is virtual, hybrid or in-person delivery then contact us to discuss an in-house workshop. You can also check out my final public workshops for 2023 below.
